Cambodia Moves to Establish First Professional Journalism Charter

PHNOM PENH, July 24, 2024 — The Ministry of Information held a workshop this morning to gather insights from various journalistic associations and media professionals aimed at crafting Cambodia's first professional journalism charter. The event took place at the Ministry and marks a significant step toward enhancing journalistic standards and media security within the country.

Neth Pheaktra, Minister of Information, facilitated the discussion on the draft "Journalism Professional Charter," seeking contributions from seven key associations in the media sector. The attendees included representatives from UNESCO, the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ), the Association of Cambodian Journalists (Camboja), and the Cambodia-China Press Association, the Journalism Association for the Development of Journalism, MSJ Electronic Media Association (MSJ), and the Muslim Information Center of Cambodia.

Tep Asarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesman for the Ministry of Information, emphasized the importance of establishing a professional journalism code to unify media ethics and conduct across the country. “This charter is crucial for promoting the fundamental values of journalism and ensuring orderly conduct within the media landscape,” stated Asarith.

At the workshop, the journalists, media outlets and associations in Cambodia affirmed that the Kingdom needs a unified Charter for Professional Journalism. "The participating journalists, media organizations and associations in the workshop recognized the necessity and importance of establishing the "Charter for Professional Journalism" and expressed their support for the process of drafting the charter as well as consultation modalities to promote the professional values ​​of the information and audio-visual profession in Cambodia," said TEP Asnarith, Under Secretary of State and Spokesman to the Ministry of Information.

The initiative responds to the dynamic challenges posed by the rapid evolution of modern technology, which impacts how information is disseminated and consumed. The Ministry of Information, along with other stakeholders, is keen on ensuring that media operations remain effective and secure, aligning with contemporary needs.

The proposed charter aims to foster a common understanding and implementation of journalistic ethics, enhancing the quality of media practices in Cambodia.
